The borders; defining space, area and within/without relationships. The Horizon signify the undefinable, the distant and the beyond. Repartition has always played an important part in my practice, the drawing works made up of many marks. Drawing these marks takes up focus and demands reflection, a long process drawn out by using nib & ink. Scratching into the paper; further ideas spring to mind, while trying to complete one Horizon/goal new paths emerge. This builds the series up, readdressing horizons, confining them.

I hope you enjoy looking round my site, I have placed a site map on the left that will link you to various areas of the site. It mostly breaks down into series of works, showcasing each.

Nathan Chenery,
nathanchenery@gmail.com

News & Information

YORK OPEN

I have had two works selected by an independent panel as part of York Open, you can see these at Bar Lane Studios before the 28th August. CLICK HERE FOR MORE INFO

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 225px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_I_KZKq8FyaE/TGkRGSUYtUI/AAAAAAAAAkk/WfTh2t_qcPQ/s400/BarLane+image.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5505950819131372866" />

First Weekend of Saltbox Exhibition

I had a great day yesterday at the opening in Saltbox, I have sold 3 works so far, Queer Purple has now gone and two prints. It is 670mm long and only 100mm high and is the second attempt even after doing three studies. The studies above show dark-light-dark and the opposite and look at how mark density can have great effect on distance. However ‘Sliver Study II’ not shown here was the one I decided to take forward at this stage.

In increasing the size it dramatically increases the effect, as the line could not be much thinner using the marks the whole piece had to change in scale to get the desired effect. Showing how this work is dependent on a range of factors such as scale in this case.

Images above:

Sliver - Ink & Pencil on 180lb Arches Paper, h. 100 X 670mm £ 195
Sliver Study - Ink & Pencil on 180lb Arches Paper, h. 100 X w. 250mm £ 28
Sliver Study III - Ink & Pencil on 180lb Arches Paper, h. 100 x w. 250mm £ 28

'Horizon' series

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_I_KZKq8FyaE/RciqGBLKR3I/AAAAAAAAAFE/Ck9bkcTdEi8/s320/Horizon,+Net+copy.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5028456004330342258" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_I_KZKq8FyaE/RbTwm2NEyTI/AAAAAAAAAA4/1hb4PeQzJ-Q/s320/Three+Square.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5022904034600995122" />

This is the first in the ‘Horizon’ series, the first fully resolved work

As you see just marks on a page, then a horizon grows a recognisable form that resonates. This work looks at ‘Modernism’ for its main influences, looking Sandra Blow, her work ‘Three Square’ helped form the ideas surrounding the use of boarders. After being involved with an exhibition at Minster Fine Art (www.minsterfineart.co.uk) showing Sandra Blow and David Hockney the importance of a simple clear image struck me. Onwards and upwards, the Queer marks looked to the horizon and what I am left with is two series of work that balance on one guiding principle of marks on a page.

The 'Queer Purple' Series
The 'Horizon' series

It is never that simple, these marks are individually made with a dip pen, a calligraphy nib that is made to write, to communicate something. Yet it just makes marks; simple, clear with each and everyone making a whole. They build up on paper, Arches paper nothing else the weight can change but the high quality stays the same, the edges remain torn to show it is real.

It is all very 'Modernist' a clear abstract image. Well that is the 'Horizon' series, the 'Queer Purple' remains at the centre with it life coming from all that surrounds it, how Post-modern.

More to follow...

Nathan

Print work

NEW PRINTS

Below are 4 new prints from earlier this year. Now there is an edition of 12 with 4 artist proofs. One of these proofs was given to some dear friends Susan & Phil (check out Susan’s work via the link)

Printmaking is a new avenue; it was taken on as a means of producing work that could be sold for less. Original prints can offer so much as a medium and with a lower price tag can offer themselves to a wider audience. With editions some of the preciousness is taken away compared with drawing & paintings that take a great deal of time for only one piece.

These prints are a new take on the ‘Horizon’ series. The first difference is the fact the image is negative giving a much more dense piece that is eye catching. The print has been left with plenty of border to highlight it.

Image above:

Visit – Mono Print on Cartage Paper, Ed. 12 + 4 AP, h. 151 x w. 200, £ 30 unframed

Queer Regiment

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_I_KZKq8FyaE/RchFFBLKRvI/AAAAAAAAADk/xOPjXEQ-s8E/s320/Regiment,+Net.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5028344936476067570" />

This piece follows on from the last post; this too was to be called Valour but once again the piece change during the making. It became this huge mass of purple bodies and hence it became a big queer regiment .It follows the idea of Valour but again to aggressive, yet it still represents a group but in this case its all queerkind.

A regiment is a mass of people (usually army based) that rest on a similar history or set of beliefs. This unit helps keeps moral and a sense of belonging, so we must all remember their is a big queer regiment behind us all.

Gay people are not only part of standard but have there own history that must be remembered. It was original to be called ‘Valour’ going back to the last post, however in the end it did not fit the bill. Valour was to be about all those brave Gay men/artist who contributed to queer rights today. This piece did not do that so it became a snafu, it is more of a fighting piece so the right refers to ‘Right Wing’ views and the wrongs there.

Right Snafu - Ink & Pencil on Arches Paper, h. 560 x w. 565mm £ 200

Figuring a Name

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_I_KZKq8FyaE/RcioPBLKRxI/AAAAAAAAAD8/A7xnlIHox9c/s320/Untitled+(Self+Portrait)+Net.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5028453959925909266" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_I_KZKq8FyaE/RcioPRLKRyI/AAAAAAAAAEE/ocGqtTeEpHQ/s320/Untitled+(Self+Portrait),+Detail,+Net.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5028453964220876578" />

Untitled is not a word to use on finished pieces of artwork but here it was vital. My process for the ‘Horizon’ series is to start with a rough idea and a working name. Then follows a short working out in a sketchbook, looking at the name and general piece working around the idea, sometimes the idea survives but mostly things change round a bit which is the point a study is needed.

Then with a study comes a re-think or working out in depth i.e. what dimensions of paper and boarder etc… then the task of producing the work. While doing this more ideas form for other works or the one that is being produced with the name often changing as the piece develops.

This piece the name just did not click, it was a portrait hence its format but in the end it is untitled with an identity tag.

Images above:

Untitled (Self Portrait) – Ink &
